The use of MI has been empirically established in several studies. This workshop will review a current research study funded by NIDA to assess the effect of MI on engagement and retention of Latino clients in a substance abuse program. Participants will have an opportunity to understand MI as a culturally competent tool that is Latino client centered.


An Integrated Approach to Trauma and Recovery Using MI, DBT and Prolonged Exposure Therapy

This workshop will describe an innovative and unique model for delivering customized services for women in residential treatment. Managing trauma as well as recovery in early residential treatment will be emphasized. Participants will learn how to integrate and use MI, DBT and PET techniques to manage trauma from assessment thorough stages of treatment.


The Art and Practice of Effective Leadership

Special emphasis will be placed on strength-based approaches to leadership, management and supervision. It is designed to inform substance abuse counselors, mental health counselors, juvenile probation and correctional specialists about how to provide developmentally appropriate treatment for at-risk youth.


Fathers and Sons: Healing a Shared Wound and Working More Effectively With Adolescent and Adult Males

This workshop will assist counselors who work with adolescent boys and adult men to better understand the development of the male emotional life, the anger-hurt “one-two punch” and how to approach males with understanding instead of fear. The workshop will also focus on ways to support mothers throughout treatment and recovery from substance abuse. This workshop is for both men and women.
